How do I get my 16 month old son to sleep on his own in his crib all night?

People advise me to just let him cry. He usually falls asleep nursing and then I nurse him back to sleep every time he wakes up (which is every 2 hours) all night. I am scared he can cry all night long and not sleep at all and then cry all day because he will not get the sleep he needs. I've tried many things like white noise machine, mage, soft blankets, stuffed animals, he just hates it all and keeps crying and jumping in his crib till I get him. I am affraid he can also throw up if he keeps jumping and hysterically crying all night. I don't know what to do and how to wean him off the when I have to nurse him back to sleep all night otherwise he will not sleep. He doesn't like the bottle or a pacifier either.
